Drink or drive?Pick 1.

In 2000, Michael Woodring was 21 and thought he was invincible. He drank, he drove, and a mile from home his car hit a telephone pole. He woke up three months later with a brain injury he still lives with every day.

Michael's story

One night. Twenty-six years.

The night

Michael and his friend Mike went to a local bar. He dropped Mike off and headed home in the rain. A mile or two from his house he lost control, and his car went into a telephone pole hard enough to rip the door off.

Three months later

He woke up from a coma not knowing where he was or what had happened. "I slowly came out of it and realized that what I had done was permanent."

The cost

A brain injury to the right side of his brain. Six surgeries on his feet, two on his arms, metal pins. Therapists who told him he'd probably never walk. A cooking school he was supposed to start one month later.

Today

Michael works every day to walk, read and get his story out so nobody else has to live it. "I thank God every day I did not kill someone."

Before your first drink

Pick your ride now.

Michael had choices that night. You do too. Decide how you're getting home before you start drinking, while you're still thinking clearly.

Call a friend

Or a parent. Nobody who loves you will be mad about a late-night call.

Rideshare

Uber or Lyft costs a lot less than a DUI, a hospital stay or a funeral.

Designated driver

Pick them before the party starts, and thank them on the way home.

Stay put

Crash on the couch. The drive will still be there in the morning.
